"Gear box?" Are you referring to a rear or front differential? Or a combo of rear, front and transaxle? If so, you will have one of two scenerios; a drain plug and a fill plug, or just a fill plug. If there is only a fill plug, the old fluid will have to be pumped out with either a hand pump or electric pump, then filled. If there are two plugs, make sure you remove the fill plug before the drain plug is dropped or the vacuum may cause the drain plug to get stuck. The transaxle will require tansmission fluid, not gear oil. If you're doing the transax too, make sure you have the correct fluid for the job and upon completion check the Transmission Fluid level under the hood with the car running.

As to the amount of oil, Make sure you have the right gear oil first, i.e. synthetic or not and whether or not a slip additive is needed. Fill the gear box until the fluid flows full and heavy out of the hole, have the plug in hand, and when the fluid begins to become a steady fine stream, screw the plug tightly back in place.
