In the United States in 1950, there were 12 channels, numbered 2 through 13, although even large cities only had 4 or 5 at the most, and there were only 108 stations in the entire country. UHF broadcasting began in 1952, opening channels 14 through 83, although channels 70 to 83 were later reclaimed so that those frequencies could be used for mobile phones.
