There were four. In the first debate, Nixon forgot to shave or wear make-up, so looked sick, uncomfortable and perspiring, while Kennedy looked relaxed and in control. This may well have influenced the final result. Although Kennedy won a clear victory in the first debate, Nixon won the next two debates. The fourth and final debate was a draw which saw the best performances from both men.
