US losses at Iwo Jima were 6,821 killed, 19,217 wounded and battle
fatigue casualties totaled 2,648. The Marines sustained 23,573 total
casualties, or about 33 percent of their available force.
Japanese losses are estimated at 20,000 and only 1,083 prisoners were
taken.
The US Marines suffered 6,821 killed, and 17,372 wounded (US Navy losses are not included in these figures). Although the Japanese forces had some 21,850 killed, Iwo Jima was the first and only battle where the Marines suffered more killed and wounded than their enemy.
It is unknown exactly how many people died at Iwo Jima, but it was very likely between 24,500 and 25,400.

The last battle of WWII, May '45. For the first time, the US Army overshadowed the US Marines in fighting for Okinawa; and the largest US Naval losses to Kamikazes off shore; the highest ranking US military officer killed in action (by Japanese artillery) ... General Simon Buckner.
The quickest way off Okinawa would have been a plane or a helicopter but in most cases they were taken off by Higgins Boats or other land craft boats. You could swim but it would take forever to reach the ship waiting offshore.

Okinawa was an Army campaign, under General Simon B. Buckner Jr., commander of the US Army's 10th Army. Iwo Jima was a Marine Corps campaign. However, Marines did fight on Okinawa; see the website "Battle of Okinawa", then look at the referrences at the bottom of the article for research material on the US Marines (at Okinawa).

US Marines .

US Marines prevailed over the Japanese .
Iwo Jima & Okinawa were both major battles where the Japanese fought US Marines in WW2 .
In terms of number of ships , the Okinawa invasion fleet was larger. In terms of casualties the number was far greater at Okinawa. The US Navy deaths were higher than Marines or Army.
