The USS Constitution was "laid up in ordinary" in Boston on July 4, 1828. The was the sailing era's equivalent of mothballs. This was necessary because the ship was badly in need of maintenance, with rot in her wood. By that time she had lasted two to three times as long as a sailing ship was expected to last. There was talk of scrapping her, but the poem "Old Ironsides" by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr (father of the later Supreme Court Justice) appeared and provoked an outporing of public indignation at the thought of breaking her up. She was rebuilt over the next seven years, at tremendous cost. She returned to active operations in 1835 and was in ordinary again in 1851 for another rebuild, and recomissioned in 1852. Steamships soon were replacing sailing craft and in 1855 Constitution was refitted as a training ship, for use by Naval Academy Midshipmen. She is still to this day a commissioned ship of the US Navy.
