How long does it take to drill a gas well?

Its easy once you have your permits and well license set up. Prepare your drill site, hire a drilling contractor and move the rig onto you site. Drill your surface hole ( required to go just past the water table in order to seal it off to prevent contamination). Then you would run your surface casing and cement it in place. This is what you will weld on your casing bowl to, which will then have your Blow Out Preventer (BOP). Once pressure and function testing is done on your BOP, you can drill the next section of the well which you could then run your production casing, or it may be your intermediate section of the well. Either way you would run a second string of casing into the well which would then be cemented in again. If required or needed you may drill again through this second string until you have reached the Total Depth of your well which is based on geology and seismic data that has been pre-analyzed.

Drill engineers use a variety of instruments to monitor the process of well drilling with regards to position and angle in an effort to reach their target with precision. How important precision is can be gauged from the fact that oil wells can reach depths of approximately 2000 meters and, in some instances, as much as 3000 meters. The depth at a given point, the inclination at that point and the azimuth are three parameters guiding the drilling process. In a critical process, reliability and accuracy are of paramount importance. In such cases, micro-electrical based instruments used to determine accurate positioning in a borehole are prone to errors due to low sensitivity and magnetic interferences that prevent fixing true North as a reference point. The deeper the boreholes the greater the chances of errors. Then there are bias errors caused by drifts. Based primarily on magnetic sensors such instruments reference magnetic North that actually keeps shifting thus introducing errors over time. It is an unsatisfactory, indirect method of measurement that makes drilling a hit and miss affair.

Digging a waterwell is a very hard job. The smallest practical size you can dig in is about a 4 foot circle and you better hope there are only a few rocks. i do know men who have dug wells back when they were young, in new country in western Canada.They tell me that even a 30 foot well would take 2 men about 3-4 months of solid work . Wells have been made by excavating or drilling machines since about 1930 but are expensive. Now most wells are drilled, domestic ones with a 6" inch drill that can go to almost a thousand feet. Most home wells are around 150 feet.

It all depends on the type of borehole you require, the depth you need to get to and the surrounding geology. Not really the sort of job to be undertaken by an individual as it requires specialist equipment and knowledge of the area.
