Chemistry is fundamental in learning about Medicine. Without a background in chemistry you would be unable to ascertain how medicine would interact with the human body. You would also not have the background necessary to understand the complex chemical reactions that take place inside children.
On a more practical level, without good grades in chemistry you will have a VERY difficult time being accepted into Medical School.
Some knowledge of biochemistry is necessary to understand the normal functioning of the human body. But you do not need extensive knowledge of chemistry.
