In Scotland or any part of the UK you do not vote for a Prime Minister.
You vote for your local Member of Parliament.
He or she is usually a member of a political party, and the party elects a leader who becomes the Prime Minister if that party has the most Members of Parliament.

∙ 12y agoAustralians do not vote for a prime minister. The Prime Minister is the leader of the political party or gang if you will that wins the most seats in Parliament.
Australia is divided up into Federal electorates. The people that live in each of these electorates has the opportunity to make a preferential vote. this means that if the voters first choice does not win their vote can be counted again for their next preference. In any case after the votes are counted. This is done manually. (There are no computers involved). Under the watchful eyes of scrutineers that represent each of those that stood to be elected, a winner is announced. Australia has 3 major parties, 2 of which are a coalition. The party that has won the most seats in the lower house vote among themselves to chose the leader of their party. That person becomes the Prime Minister.
