How do you lower alkalinity but not change pH in a swimming pool?

Initially, you can't. What you do to lower alkalinity is first lower the pH to under 7.2, but not lower than 6.9. Then you aerate the pool, by creating bubbles with your brush, or by running a water feature, if you have one. This will lower your alkalinity. Maintain this lower pH and aerating until you get your alkalinity where you want it. Then retest your pH. If it is now too low, you add Mule Team Borax, say a 1/4 a cup, and then retest. The borax will raise your pH without raising your alkalinity. See the poolforum.com for more help if needed.

What do you add to a pool when alkalinity is high and pH is fine?

It will take two steps to take care of this situation. First: Use acid to lower the alkalinity to the desired level. This will lower the pH also...so: Second: Add pH up to raise the pH. This will not raise the alkalinity. Kind of a pain. Try using soft water to fill if you're just filling a spa. A pool needs too much water, so it'll take two steps. If you're starting up a spa make sure to wait long enough between adding the chemicals and taking the next test, to allow the chemical reaction to occur. Run the pump(s) (no Air) for 30 minutes then wait at least three hours before the next test.

Does chlorine affect alkalinity?

Chlorine will indeed affect alkalinity. It will lower the alkalinity. If you add chlorine gas to water, it will create hypochlorous acid and hydrochloric acid. Cl2 + H2O <-> HCl + HOCl Sodium Hypochlorite (Bleach) will do the opposite and raise pH.

How do you lower the alkalinity in a 21ft round pool?

1-2 gallons of muriatic acid will break down the buffer solution(alkalinity in the water). Will then probably have to raise pH back up
