Grasp the upper portion with the "Bates" label and try to pull it away from the portion that says "9000." If you can't get them apart, it's probably because a staple has jammed. Try keeping the stapler level (horizontal) and vigorously trying to staple and eject any jammed staples. You may need needle-nose pliers to pull out any visible portion of a jammed staple. To get better access to the opening where staples have jammed, pull down on the base, freeing it from the upper "Bates" portion, which is jammed to the "9000" portion. Another trick that may work to get the "Bates" and "9000" apart is to use a screwdriver or other tool to push forward on the small circular metal catches which are located on the sides near the front of the "9000" portion. With a lot of tugging, you'll get "Bates" and "9000" apart, and then you'll see a tray into which staples are loaded. Makes sure the loaded staples slide freely forward and back and then push them to the front. Push "Bates" and "9000" back together, and you're ready to go until the next jam, which will be soon.
