I got my UAW machine repair journeyman card by completing a 3yr company sponsored accredited apprenticeship program consisting of so many hours of OJT plus 3 years of part time college. You need 8 yrs in the field too. My 3 year apprenticeship time counted toward the 8 years in the field. Once I got my time in I filled out a journeyman card application, got a signed official company letter verifying my employment, had a skilled trades union rep sign it, got a passport photo and dropped the application off at our union hall.

To bolster myself for possible advancement I just transferred my college credits from the apprenticeship to the college credits I had before from another school so I can finish an associates degree in general studies. I have 64 credits total, but I am missing humanities, English and social science. I just signed up to take those classes in the winter. After that I will probably get into CAD and CATIA- maybe even CNC programming.

Right now and for the foreseeable future the automotive field is in dire straits. That's the field I work in. I got laid off Oct.24th, 2008 and may not go back to work until March 2009. The pay and benefits are excellent although they do vary (typically $18-$25+/hr). I earned anywhere from $50,000-$70,000/yr (o/t, bonuses included) and that was with me turning down a lot of overtime. During the good years with unlimited overtime the potential was there to earn $100,000/yr+, but I didn't want to live at the plant.

There are non-automotive jobs for machine repair like large food processing plants, aerospace manufacturing, etc. A friend of mine used his journeyman card to get a job as a building systems engineer at a large indoor arena. As you know the job market really sucks right now so try to get as many credentials as you can. And don't forget to save some maoney for a rainy day. Luckily I did just that and it is saving my butt right now! Good Luck!
