take it to a mechanic
The average time it takes to change the water pump on a 1998 Dodge Avenger is six to ten hours.
It's on the front of the motor, kinda towards the bottom of the block. You have to take the timing belt cover off to replace the water pump.
Remove battery. Remove left engine brace. Remove serpentine belt. Take off water pump pulley. Take off water pump! This was the easiest water pump I ever replaced.
The water pump is driven by timing belt, so, replace the timing belt while you are replacing water pump, because you have to take off timing belt to get to water pump.

Drain the cooling system.Remove the air filter housing.Remove the water pump belt and the water pump tensioner and any associated brackets.Unbolt and remove the water pump cover.Use a Northstar water pump socket (nothing else will work), rotate the water pump slightly clockwise, then pull it out.Replace the water pump seal. This usually is not included with the new water pump. Reverse the above steps to install the new water pump.Let me know if this helps. It looks like a hard job, but if you take your time it's pretty easy and doesn't take long. Don't rush or look for shortcuts.
