The Nazi-Soviet Pact Was an agreement made between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union right before World War II. It was signed by German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop and Soviet Foreign Minister Viacheslav Molotov, giving the agreement its nickname: Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. This pact shocked the world because until that time Germany and the Soviet Union had acted like mortal enemies. The countries made two agreements: the first dealt with economic relations, while the second was a non-aggression pact. The economic agreement, signed on August 19, 1939, called for an exchange of goods worth 200 million reichsmarks. Four days later, Ribbentrop went to Moscow to sign the non-aggression pact. The two countries agreed not to attack each other or help another party attack the other side for a period of 10 years. The pact also included a secret attachment concerning the division of various territories. The Baltic States (Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia) and Bessarabia were to be part of the Soviet sphere, while Lithuania's claim of Vilna and its surroundings was acknowledged by the Germans. Poland was to be divided between the two countries. A week after the second agreement was signed, Germany invaded Poland. The Soviet Union took over the eastern part of the country, including western Belorussia and the western Ukraine, while Germany occupied the rest. In 1940 the Soviets annexed the Baltic States, Bessarabia, and northern Bukovina. However, the pact was abruptly broken by the Germans when they invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941. This caused World War 2 because this gave Hitler more power because he did not have to fight on two fronts. He thought that with Stalin's army, alongside his, he would win the war. Moreover, the Nazis thought that with this pact, Russia could not help Britan and France as they had no America to help them which would have resulted as a lost war for the French and British.

The Russo-German Non-Aggression Pact was first violated by Adolf Hitler, although it is unlikely that Stalin or Hitler ever intended on keeping the pact throughout the entirety of the war. Their extremely opposite ideologies would have prevented this.

The US State Department defined the Kellog Briand pact of 1928 in this manner:The Kellogg-Briand Pact was an agreement to outlaw war signed on August 27, 1928. Sometimes called the Pact of Paris for the city in which it was signed, the pact was one of many international efforts to prevent another World War, but it had little effect in stopping the rising militarism of the 1930s or preventing World War II.

Placing oneself in the post war Nuremberg war trials, it's certainly understandable that the judgments placed all the blame for the outbreak of WW 2 on Nazi Germany. Certainly, it was Hitler's attempt to become the world's only great power through war. With that said, nothing at Nuremberg or shortly thereafter saw any reason to place either Western appeasement or the Nazi-Soviet Pact as part of the cause of the war. The Allies nor was that Pact on trial. Blame fell squarely on Nazi Germany, which was logical. However, there is no doubt that appeasement and the Nazi-Soviet Pact contributed to the outbreak of the war.
