In Britain there was conscription (the draft) and direction of labour. This extended to childless women aged 19-30. (In other words, you couldn't choose your job or career). Going to college was almost impossible for men. The media and mail to and from abroad were subject to censorship. Food was rationed, buildings were taken over for government use and everyone had to carry an ID card at all times.
