He believed that everything rotated around the sun. Also, he believed that the planets orbit were not circular, they are oval. He was a catholic, but they didn't like him because he was going against the church with what he believed.

(We now know this is correct) The catholic church and others believed that all other planets revolved around the earth. Since he challenged this idea against the catholic church he was sentenced to house arrest for the rest of his life.
