Turkey is between 37° and 42° north of the equator, which is a distance of at least 4000 km (2500 miles). The countries around the Meditteranean Sea are farther north than most people visualize. Ankara, Turkey is at about the same latitude (40°) as Philadelphia, PA or Columbus, Ohio.

Some parts of the US are closer to the equator than any part of Greece is, and

some parts of the US are farther from the equator than any part of Greece is.

But some parts of Greece are closer to the equator than some parts of the US

are, and also, at the same time, farther from the equator than other parts of

the US are. So I'm not sure that you could make a single simple statement on

the subject that would qualify as a sweeping blanket one.

The southern-most point of the US is closer to the Equator than the southern-most point of Greece. The northern-most point of Greece is closer to the Equator than the northern-most point of the US.

Greece is above the equator .

Being very pedantic, you would have to say north of the equator line - an Australian might see above and below differently!
