Britain

As a minor edit, Great Britain secured itself in the eastern half of what is now part of the United States. The 13 American colonies were safe when the French and Indian War thwarted France's plans to retain territory west of the 13 American colonies. France also lost heavily in Canada.

This war was an international one as fighting between Great Britain and her allies were pitted against France and her allies in parts of Europe and elsewhere.

The cost of victory was high however for Great Britain. It sought to solve this by raising taxes on the 13 American colonies, who, according to the British Crown, did not contribute enough to the war.

Up until 1776 Great Britain was the nation that settled, fought, and won control of the eastern half of what is now the US. The 13 colonies of the British Empire, acting as a proxy on behalf of Britain did the actual settling. After 1783, the "United States" continued the advancing war on the redman's territory west & southward (taking Florida, etc).
