Rtr. turning clockwise. Rotate distributor counter clockwise to advance timing, clockwise to retard.
To advance, rotate the distributor counter-clockwise. To retard, roatate it clockwise).
Counter clockwise to advance.......clockwise to retard
Turn it clockwise to retard it. Counter clockwise to advance it. If this was not your question then asked it again.
You can't set the timing but you can either advance or retard it from the distributor.
Disconnect any vacuum hoses from the distributor and plug them. Then you loosen the distributor hold down screws and turn it clockwise to advance the timing or counter clockwise to retard it. Tighten the hold downs, reconnect the vacuum lines and away you go.
Loosen the distributor, bring the #1 piston to Top Dead Center (TDC), connect the timing light, and rotate the distributor clockwise or counterclockwise to advance or retard the timing until the timing light indicates that it's set properly.
Think you are talking about 'pinking'. Check plug electrode gap is correct, check distributor advance/retard mechanism, reset/retard ignition timing
Out side of the timing chain and gears being replaced there are no adjustments. The vehicle computer controls the timing. On other vehicles the distributor can be turned in either direction to advance or retard the timing. This is not the case for the 4.3 v6.
I'm not sure if you can on that model. If it has a distributor, you can loosen the hold down bolt and turn it to advance or retard your timing. If it doesn't have a distributor, it set by the ecm.
you could advance or retard the timing on the distributor by simply rotating it clockwise or counter clock wise depending which way your engine rotates.(usually clockwise) there is a nut that holds down the distributor shaft, loosen it up and you would be able to move the distributor.(carefull not to allow the shaft to come out of its base),DO NOT remove the nut all the way. on another note you may need to adjust the static timing(distributor timing) completely if you want the vehicle to start on the first try.
Through the carburetor or advance or retard the distributor by turning the distributor cap barely left or right. If you cant turn it then loosen the bolt holding the distributor on to the intake with a wrench then turn the distributor til the engine sounds like its not missing or not to where it's about to turn off.
turn the distrubtor in the oposite direction the engine turns (it turns). Retard by turning it the same direction. There is a tab on the shaft with marks on the block to guage how much you are turning.
