This type of injury is called a Glasgow Smile, also a Chelsea Smile or Chelsea Grin. It is accomplished by making small horizontal cuts in the corners of the mouth and then beating the victim in the chest and abdomen until the cuts tear back to the ears from the facial contractions. Victims typically bleed to death and are left with a ghoulish grin.
The practice was first utilized in Glasgow during the 19th century, and also in London into the mid to late 20th Century (primarily there by the the Chelsea Headhunters).
The injuries are specific to the Black Dahlia murder and it has been featured in a number of popular public media such as film and comics.
