The above answer makes the logical argument that is widely accepted. Something seems wrong about it though. Roughly asked---if there are no atoms or photons, is there no heat? We are saying that if it can't be measured, there is nothing there. But what if there is something there that we can't see, or detect? We just held an antimatter hydrogen atom still for a tenth of a second at least today. Antimatter is supposed to take up half of our universe. Is is hot? Apparently not, because they had to create conditions which were close to absolute zero to hold that bugger still.
Cold dose not exist it is the absence of heat. Man has made up this term zero being no heat at all. It is the law of Physics.

Because in science, cold doesn't exist. You can't make cold, you can only remove heat. But in human language we've made words to describe the absences too. Dark is the absence of light. Cold is the absence of heat. Vacuum is the absence of all material. So insulation can't keep the cold out, since the cold doesn't exist. What you can do though is keep the heat in. Heat is a real thing. You can make heat.
