The M-1 Steel helmet has a stripe of metal rolled over the edge of the bottom of the helmet. The helmets made during WW2 had this edge strip meet at a seam in the FRONT of the helmet. All Vietname era helmets was made so the seam was in the rear. However, the problem is that this change in manufacture was begun during WW2 so some WW2-era helmets also have the seam in the rear.
That is much as I know. There are some new books available that describe all the details of helmets and their Liners and the many variations.
