Yes. Marie Curie with her husband Pierre, amongst other things were credited with the discovery of Radium - a radioactive material that is now used to treat cancer by killing off cancer cells because of the rays that it gives off. As a result Marie Curie won the Nobel prize.
However, too much exposure to radium can also cause various cancers as the rays from it can also make healthy cells mutate into cancerous ones. Sadly, as a result of her work, Marie died of leukaemia - a cancer of the blood. Pierre died as a result of an accident with a horse and carriage - before the cancer could strike him down too.
