He made sure he said it within earshot of Derek. Then I think Derek got possesed by someone he called 'Kreed Kafer'. This is how they knew he was fake. Kreed Kafer is a completely made up name and turns out to be an anogram of 'Derek Faker'.

But personally, I don't think it's fake. Because if it was found out to be fake then they'd probably lose their rights to make the programme so I don't see why they'd jeopardise what they have. Either way, if it's real or fake it's also very entertaining, especially when Karl and Stuart are locked in rooms together.
