It depends on the reason for taking these medications. If you have a stomach ache due to gas it is better to take only the Alka Seltzer since it includes aspirin for pain and a basic substance for raising the pH (reducing acidity) of your stomach. If you have acid reflux or an ulcer then you want to take just the Tums as it only contains Calcium Carbonate, which will raise the pH of your stomach and alleviate the acid burn. A better alternative to Tums for ulcer or acid reflux is a drug like Omeprazole (Prilosec OTC) or Famotidine. Taking Alka Seltzer for ulcer pain will exacerbate the condition due to the included Aspirin.
