You can certainly remove any person from coverage under your own auto insurance policy. You can not however cancel another persons Policy.
The first named insured on a policy is geenrally considered the owner of the policy and can make whatever changes required.
If you have a joint owned policy and with respect to common law, it migt be wiser to simlply pick up a new policy for yourself and allow the old one to lapse or expire.

If you do get legally separated, you can cancel insurance as you have had "change in status." Usually insurance companies will process changes outside of open enrollment when you have a change in family status. An example of this would be getting married, having a baby, or getting divorced/legally separated.
