You should never assume that ANYTHING will protect you against an electric shock, regardless of the voltage, unless that thing has been specifically-designed for that purpose. If you want a pair of gloves to protect you against 120 V, then you should be using rubber gloves, specifically designed for that purpose, and made by a reputable manufacturer. Similarly, with tools, such as screwdrivers; the fact that a screwdriver has a plastic handle doesn't mean that it is safe to use with live electrical components unless it has been specifically designed for that purpose.

What are high voltage gloves?

High voltage gloves, also known a gauntlets, are gloves worn by utility line men. There are two parts to the gloves. The inner pair are made of a high dielectric rubber numbered from 00 to #4 which covers voltage ranges from 500 to 36000 volts. The outer pair are made of leather. They are used to stop perforation and scratch cuts of the inner gloves from wires end perforation. Before the gloves are used they have to be tested by the person that is using them. Every year they have to be sent to a testing laboratory to be tested with high voltage to make sure that they still maintain their voltage insulation number rating. If the gloves fail this test the gloves are destroyed and new ones have to be purchased. These gloves are for line men safety and are worn even when the high voltage system is de energized.

Emissions from welding can be heat, light, sparks, slag, and smoke. Each one can be hazardous. Work clothes, leather gloves, and boots can help protect you from heat, light, sparks, and slag. A welding helmet with the correct shade lens will protect your face and eyes from heat, light, sparks and some of the smoke. A means to remove the smoke is very important.
