However alcohol breaks down the oils and fat in your skin. When oils and fat are removed from skin you are more likely to develop skin issues. Note: a fragrant lotion does NOT replace these oils and fats either. Most lotions and hand sanitizers have a "moisturizer". A moisturizer actually coats the skin with a substance that causes the skin to sweat so it feels moist and supple. This sweat further dries the skin. We have become a society of germaphobes. Alcohol based hand sanitizer should only be used when soap and water are not available. To be effective alcohol based hand sanitizers need at least a 15 second contact time to kill "germs". Most evaporate before the 15 second contact time.
