Many, many scientific and mathematical discoveries were made by the Arabic people. They were the scientists of the world a few hundred years after the time of Jesus Christ.
A number of modern words come from the early Arabic language - Soda, coffee, and sugar, for example, and many of the Spanish words (later borrowed by the english). These words are mainly recognized because they start with "Al", or "The" in the old Arabic. Al Hambra, algebra, alchemy, alkali, and many more.
Just one example of an early Arabic scientist was Abbas Firnas (810-887) Believe it or not, he was a scientist, musician and inventor. He found a process to make clear glass used in drinking glasses, and lenses used for magnification and for eyeglasses.
Firnas allegedly had a room where the sky was simulated, including the motion of planets, stars and weather complete with clouds, thunder and lightning.
Firnas most likely came up with a method for flying, and escaped serious injury trying it out.
