Same-sex marriage is a problem because an entire class of people has been denied legal recognition of their families and relationships. Although there is tremendous resistance to granting them civil rights, there are many activists and advocates who are willing to work continuously for as long as it takes to secure equal rights. The result is a long, drawn-out legal battle in the courts, legislatures and dinner tables of this nation.
OpinionSame sex marriage is a problem in the eyes of many people for many reasons.
For the majority of people who oppose same sex marriage they believe it is an affront to God. Those people believe that God created marriage as a union between a man and a woman for the purpose of having children. Of course, that belief is derived from religious doctrine that was created by theologians. For those people, a marriage between persons of the same sex is immoral and sinful. They seem not to notice that having children is not a requirement of marriage anywhere on earth. For people who support same sex marriage it is essentially an even distribution of both legal rights, civil rights and human rights and has nothing to do with religion.
Some people are simply accustomed to seeing marriages between persons of the opposite sex. They cannot accept a long term, loving relationship between persons of the same sex even though those have always been a part of human existence.
Some people don't approve of homosexuality and therefore do not approve of same sex couples enjoying the benefits of marriage. They ignore all the negative ways in which opposite sex couples abuse the institution of marriage. They approve of the continued discrimination against same sex committed couples.
