Answer 2

Abraham was a historical person, as recorded in the Book of Genesis (ch.11-25); and his gravesite is known to this day, in the Machpelah at Hebron, Israel. He is revered by Jews, Christians, and Muslims. The Jewish people have attested to his existence for 3800 years, and his name is mentioned by several ancient non-Jewish historians as far back as 2,300 years ago. These include Berosus, Alexander Polyhistor, Melo, Eupolemus, Artapanus, Hecateus, and Nicolaus Damascenus.

There is much in The Bible to show that Abraham was not a real, historical person. Abraham is supposed to have lived before 2000 BCE, but the biblical account contains references to nations and cities that could not have existed at that time. The Philistines only settled in Palestine around 1200 BCE, yet Abraham travelled on foot to their land and met their kings. Edom, supposedly founded by Esau, did not become a political entity until the eighth century BCE. The Bible assumes the use of camels for transport. The Chaldeans did not enter southern Babylon from the Arabian Peninsula until around 700 BCE. Finkelstein and Silberman say that camels were only domesticated late in the second millennium and came into widespread use by 7th century BCE, or a little earlier.

Genesis 11:31 reports that Abraham's father, Terah took Abraham, and his grandson Lot the son of Haran, from Ur in Chaldea to Harran in southeastern Turkey, on the way to Canaan. That Ur and Harran were the two principal cities of the moon god, Sin, is on the surface is a strange coincidence and suggests a deeper significance. There is much in the stories of the Hebrew Patriarchs that suggests that they themselves were once personifications of the moon god.

Why do most people not accept that everyone mentioned in the Bible is fictional?

This is because, on a purely secular, historical view, not every person in the Bible was fictional. True, the stories of Adam and Eve, Noah and even Abraham appear to be mythical, and Moses and Joshua probably never existed. But most of the kings of Israel and Judah were real, historical people, whether or not their biblical stories are not factual. The Bible is seen by critical scholars as a mixture of myth, legend and history.
