The Romans turned up but really the only time the Greek empire was important and prosperous was when Alexander the great was King. So there really really was a greek empire only when Alexander was King. Did you know Alexander the Great had Epilepsy.

When Christianity began to spread, Greece was one of the major rooting grounds, mainly because Christianity offered something that their own religion didn't; hope for a reward in the afterlife that wasn't based on the whim of a god you didn't really believe in anyway. Many aspects of Greek religion were incorporated into early Christianity (the idea of heaven as an eternal reward, the idea of Hell, a plethora of holidays). As Christianity became the religion of choice in the Roman Empire, the old Greek and Roman religions began to falter and eventually faded altogether.
