Actually, in "Jesus He Knows Me," he is mocking preachers who do not practice what they preach, and those who are weak-minded enough to follow them. Hehe, good question. His voice is more soothing, not so harsh as most singers. It appears he may have had years of choral practice, with his annunciation of his words in his songs. You are familiar with his work alone, and with Genesis? Compare the two, side by side, with any song he sang while in Genesis, and with let's say a Disney song he did...You'll be in My Heart comes to mind.
