What is a rinoceros horn made of?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It's made of keratin-that's the stuff your hair and nails are made of. The horn is a pretty distinctive feature-the name "rhinoceros" is actually made of two Greek words meaning "nose" and "horn". Tragically, rhinos are often killed for their horns. The once-large rhinoceros family has dwindled to just a few living species almost all of which are threatened with extinction.

How does the French horn work?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

wen u blow into it, the air goes through and it makes a sound. when you move your lips, the pitch changes. The rotors are attached to tubes that change the pitch. when you put down that finger, the rotor moves and opens the tube that changes the pitch. Your right hand can also change the tone and the pitch. if you put your hand farther into the bell, the pitch goes down and the tone gets more muffled. When your hand comes out more, the pitch goes up and the tone becomes less muffled

How do you transpose from trumpet to French horn?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You play a whole step down from the written note. When an F horn player is asked to play a written C, the note that will come out will be an F concert pitch. When an Eb horn player is asked to play a written C, the note that will come out will be an Eb concert pitch. That is why they are called F and Eb instruments. So when an F horn player is asked to play a C written for an Eb horn, in order to play the concert Eb, he will have to play a Bb. You will be adding two flats to your key signature (mentally), and if sharps are in the Eb part's key signature, you will cancel two of them. In the case of the key of G major, where there is only one sharp, you will cancel the sharp and add one flat.

Who was the french leader in 1939?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Big Three were Roosevelt (American), Churchill (British) and Stalin (Russian). The French leader you are probably thinking of was Charles De Gaulle who was the self-appointed leader of the Free French forces. He was not one of the Big Three. He could be quite difficult to work with though and what Churchill and Roosevelt would call him when nobody else was around probably does not bear repeating.

What is a different in a french horn and a brass instrument?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The only differences are the size, the french horn mouthpiece is smaller, and the instrument they were made for!

French horn mouthpieces are conical producing a warm round sound, whereas trumpet mouthpieces are cup shaped which allows for a brighter more direct sound. The rim (where the lips touch the mouthpiece) of a horn mouthpiece is generally narrower and much thinner than a trumpet mouthpiece.

Why is the French horn a most difficult instrument to play?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The French horn is a most difficult instrument to play for many reasons. First, the tone may be discouraging from beginning and inexperienced players. It's apt to be wobbly without dedicated practice and experience.

Second, a French horn's sound is effective only in the upper notes. It requires more effort to produce higher than lower notes. So a French horn player must breathe very hard into the mouthpiece.

Third, the French horn's mouthpiece is difficult to work with. It's unique in having a funnel shaped mouthpiece. All other brass instruments have cup shaped mouthpieces. So experience with most other brass instruments is no help in learning this particularly challenging brass instrument.

Fourth, the tube of the French horn is about 16 feet/5.3 meters long. That means a lot of length through which the player must project breath. And the tube is not only long, but big. In fact, it forms a big circle. The player's hands must be able to be placed around the edge of that circle. At the same time, the fingers must be able to touch keys that aren't user friendly. They're located in the middle of the instrument!

What family is the french horn in brass or string or woodwind or purcushin?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Horns are actually mid-range instruments. They're dead center in the spectrum of brass instruments: lower than trumpets, but higher than trombones and tubas. They often share super similar parts to alto saxes in concert band repertoir. However, horns have quite a large range because of its conical (cone) shape, and aren't restricted to a set range like trumpets and trobones are.

Hope this helps! =)

The French horn is an F instrument. That means when a middle C is played on the horn, it sounds the same as an F a fifth below middle C on the piano.

What is this most expensive French horn?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A lot of work goes into making a professional level Horn. Some Triple Horns can run as much as $17,000 or even more. That is quite inexpensive compared to what some pro level flutes can cost. The most expensive flutes can run up to $84,000 for a platinum hand made Haynes.

Is the oboe more difficult to play than the french horn since oboists have to make their own reeds?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Both the oboe and the French horn are both particularly difficult instruments. The fact that an oboist has to make his own reeds doesn't make it harder, but unless he's a good reed maker, he'll be unreliable. Oboe playing depends so much on the quality of the reed that you have to be very good at making them. I can't tell you much about the French horn but I think it's quite hard to place the right note before playing it, the oboe doesn't have this problem.

What is the french horns role in a brass band?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The french horn is part of the brass family of instruments. In an orchestra or similar ensemble the french horn commonly plays akey melodic role in the overall structure of the piece. However the role of the french horn, or any instrument, is entirely up to the composer. This means that it cannot be clarified as to what the definate role of the french horn is, as it has no definite role.

But it is most commonly part of the key melodic structure otherwise it plays a harmonic role.

What horns are related french horn?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The french horn is in the category of Brass instruments. All other brass instruments are technically relatives of the french horn.

----------------

The closest thing I could think of is a mellophone.... Its like a french horn but for Marching Band.... It sort of looks like a trumpet. Trumpets are also relatives of the french horn... I would suggest if you are a beginner to start out on the trumpet then move to one of these instruments.... I would know because I play mellophone now and its my 3rd year of band and I just stopped playing trumpet. Hope this helps.

How do you identify the model number of a holton french horn?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Put the bell on your lap, position the lead pipe away from your head. Look down towards the bell. The model number should be engraved in that area. If you're looking for the serial number, I'd try looking on a valve casing, often the second valve.

Brass tubing needed for the french horn?

Simply put, it's the part on the very top where the mouthpiece goes into. Sometimes, it's a different color/finish than the rest of the horn and is usually a little bit thicker than the tubing directly after it.

What is the concert scale of the french horn?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The French horn is built so that it sounds in the key of F. If a hornist's music says to play a middle C, it will be the same pitch as an F below middle C on the piano. If a piece of music is writen in Concert F, a C-instrument, such as a trombone, will have one flat (B flat) in his or her key signature while a hornist will have no sharps or flats.

Why doesn't a french horn have a spit valve?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

To get the spit and condensation out of the French Horn slide each valve out of their position in the horn and shake the contents out. Then turn the french horn around until all the water has come out. Then put each valve back in the correct place. For the key valves hold down each key while taking each valve out. That is how you get the "spit" out of a French Horn.
