Did Forrest Gump beat out the Shawshank Redemption in 1994?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The budget for "Forrest Gump" is estimated to be $55,000,000 and grossed a whopping $678,226,465 worldwide ($623,226,465 profit).

On the other hand, the budget for "The Shawshank Redemption" is estimated to be $25,000,000 and grossed $28,884,716 worldwide, which is significantly worse in comparison to Forrest Gump ($3,884,716 profit).

So, yes, Forrest Gump beat out The Shawshank Redemption in terms of profit and budget.

However, the quality difference is a different matter and it is subjective. In my personal opinion, The Shawshank Redemption is superior to Forrest Gump but ultimately it is up for debate.

What was Forrest Gump's rank in the movie?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

he was a sgt

//The above answer is partially incorrect. In the scene where Forrest gets his discharge papers, the sergeant calls him PFC, meaning private first class. Serving on tour in Vietnam would have automatically made him SP4, one rank above PFC. His uniform while in Washington DC shows three stripes which depicts the rank of sergeant, a rank he could not have earned after discharge. Gump was awarded the Medal of Honor which gives him an automatic promtion to E-5, a rank not dependant on active enlistment. E-5 is 'enlisted' and 5 means 'sergeant'. So his sergeant rank was awarded after discharge and was due to his Congressional Medal of Honor, not an earned position while in active duty*.//

*Gump's Medal of Honor would put him at a higher pay scale than his SP4 ranking salary and certain privileges including a better retirement.

The real Forrest Gump's name is George Woods, who was autistic. As with many autistic people, Woods was gifted in a particular subject, his being math. In the movie when Gump has finished running and turns to go home, he states the years, months, days, hours and minutes of his cross-country trips. That's how Woods summed things up also, all in his head without paper/pencil or calculator.
