What is the difference between horse power and torque?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

By Karl Brauer, Editor in Chief, Edmunds.com While horsepower is often considered when shopping for a vehicle, what about that "other" engine rating: torque? Specifically, what are the differences between horsepower and torque? If you flip through the pages of any automotive publication, you'll notice that these two measurements are commonly listed under vehicle specifications. And while the average car enthusiast knows that both horsepower and torque play a role in performance, most of them don't understand exactly how or why. Let's begin by explaining the technical difference between the two. Horsepower is defined as the amount of energy required to lift 550 pounds, one foot, in one second. From this definition you can see that the components of horsepower are force, distance and time. Distance and time are self-explanatory but force, specifically a twisting force, is what torque is all about. Remember that the initial energy that moves a car forward starts in the combustion chamber in the form of an explosion. This explosion forces a piston (or group of pistons) down in a straight line, which pushes on a connecting rod and turns the engine's crankshaft. It's this turning crankshaft where the twisting force of torque initiates. From there the force is carried through a flywheel, transmission, driveshaft, axle(s) and wheel(s) before moving the car. The measurement of torque is stated as pound-feet and represents how much twisting force is at work. If you can imagine a plumber's pipe wrench attached to a rusty drainpipe, torque is the force required to twist that pipe. If the wrench is two feet long, and the plumber pushes with 50 pounds of pressure, he is applying 100 pound-feet of torque (50 pounds x 2 feet) to turn the pipe (depending on the level of rust, this may or may not be enough torque). As you may have noticed, this measurement of torque does not include time. One-hundred pound-feet of torque is always 100 pound-feet torque, whether it is applied for five seconds or five years. So, if you want a quick answer to the difference between horsepower and torque, just keep in mind that horsepower involves the amount of work done in a given time, while torque is simply a measurement of force and is thus a component of horsepower. To see how torque and horsepower interact, imagine your favorite SUV (everyone has one of those, right?) at the base of a steep hill. The engine is idling and the gear lever is in the "Four-Low" position. As the driver begins to press on the throttle, the engine's rpm increases, force is transmitted from the crankshaft to each wheel, and the SUV begins to climb upward. The twisting force going to each wheel as the vehicle moves up the hill is torque. Let's say the engine is at 3,000 rpm, the gear ratio is 3, and the vehicle is creating 300 pound-feet of torque. Using the following formula, we can calculate horsepower: Take the torque of 300 multiplied by a shaftspeed of 1000 (3000 rpm divided by a gear ratio of 3) for a total of 300,000. Divide 300,000 by 5,252 and you get 57.1 horsepower that the SUV is making as it begins to ascend the hill. It is interesting to note that, since 5,252 is used to calculate horsepower by way of torque and shaftspeed, it is also the number in the rpm range at which torque and horsepower are always equal. If you were to view the horsepower and torque curves of various engines, you would notice that they always cross at 5,252 rpm. So now we have a technical understanding of how torque interacts with horsepower, but let's move beyond that to some real-world examples. For instance, we all know that a car moves from a dead stop in 1st or low gear, yet as the car's speed increases, the gears must be moved up through 2nd, 3rd and 4th to maintain acceleration. This is because at low speeds the transmission's gears work to transmit maximum torque from the engine to the wheels. You want this because it takes more force, or torque, to move a vehicle that is at rest than it does to move a vehicle in motion (Newton's 1st Law). At the same time, once a vehicle is underway, you want less torque and more horsepower to maintain a high speed. This is because horsepower is a measurement of work done and includes a time element (such as wheel revolutions per minute necessary to maintain 75 mph). Since entire books have been written on the concepts of horsepower and torque, it's not realistic to try and cover them fully in a single column. Finally, let me leave you with my favorite phrase about the relationship between horsepower and torque: Horsepower is what you read about, torque is what you feel.

How do you start a 7.3 liter diesel engine that ran out of fuel?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Usually it will need to be primed. This is done either by: Removing the fuel filter and filling it with diesel (if the filter will hold it's fuel while reinstalling), then reinstall the filter and turn over the motor until it starts. Spraying ether or diesel engine starting fluid into the engine's air intake helps considerably. Don't crank the starter more than 45 seconds continuously and give the starter a break once in awhile or it may burn out or temporarily shut itself off. Or: As above, remove the fuel filter and fill it with diesel (if it will hold it's fuel while reinstalling) and reinstall the filter. Look for the primer pump, it is usually near the filter or fuel pump along the fuel line and may have a red knob. Usually the knob is knurled for grip when turning it. Turn the knob, counter-clockwise until you can pull out (not remove) the small piston it is attached to. Pump the piston in and out until it appears soaked with fuel (this may take several minutes, especially if the filter cannot be filled beforehand), push it back into place and and tighten the knob. Try to start the motor. Ether or diesel engine starting fluid sprayed into the air intake may be helpful. Don't crank the starter more than 45 seconds continuously, and let it cool off occasionally.

It should be located under the dashboard. usually behind the center console (heater controls, stereo etc...) You should be able to just pull out the wire that is fitted into it. But be careful. The same chime is used to let you know if you've left your headlights on, or your keys in the ignition.

How do you Remove air vents 2008 F250?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you are attempting to remove the center air vents in the dash panel you will need to:

1. Remove the driver side Cigarette Lighter and the Passenger side Auxiliary plug-in. To do this locate the slot at the bottom on the each of these that will allow you to pop it loose with a screw driver.

2. After removing the panels un plug them and set them aside. You will then see 2 screws, remove these.

3. Carefully pry the panel loose. It will pop off but use gentle force so you do not break the panel.

The air vents come off with the panel. From there you can remove them or clean them...

When to plug up a diesel power stroke?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When to plug up a diesel power stroke depends on the condition of the engine and the environment in which it is running. Generally speaking it is recommended to tighten plug gaps and replace plugs every 10000-15000 miles and anytime the engine is running poorly or using more fuel than normal. Here are some additional factors to consider when deciding when to plug up a diesel power stroke:

  • Age of the engine - Older engines may require more frequent plug replacement
  • Environmental conditions - Cold weather high altitudes and dusty areas may require more frequent plug replacement
  • Driving habits - Aggressive driving and towing can cause more wear and tear on plugs requiring more frequent replacement

It is best to consult with a qualified mechanic to determine the best plug replacement schedule for your specific engine and environment.

it is either bad signal flasher or bad signal switch assembly try another flasher, swap the hazards one in place of the signals one if the hazards work right now if the hazrds dont work either then it is most likely worn switch assembly(common problem in these cars) i am working on a corsica right now that has no brake lights except the third one and it is the switch assembly worn out in it, flashers are good in it

Can a bad ignition switch keep the starter engaged?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Probably not a bad ignition switch, but more likely a bad starter solenoid. It takes a lot of current to get a starter to turn, to much to go through such a small switch like the ignition switch. The ignition switch actually controls a relay(solenoid) which can handle the needed current to get the starter going. On a lot of modern cars the solenoid is built into the starter unlike older cars and trucks where it was mounted on the firewall between the battery and the starter.

How do you replace starter on a 1998 Dodge Durango 4x4?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Take the neg battery cable off. Then the wires off of the starter then the bolts that hold it on. Then sometimes you have to remove th exhaust manifold to get it out.

you don't have to remove manifold just the 3 bolts holding the pipe to the manifold then cut the 2 bolts off the flanged conn. next to the flex loint ( this is from a 99 4x4 hope its the same ) manifold pipe bolts are self locking and very tight you have to glow (torches) them always remember fire bad should be done by someone experienced. cut the rear weld nuts off the flange. if you complete this and don't burn the truck up you need to check the flange at manifold make sure it good and clean joining surfaces at rear flange buy new nuts for manifold and new nuts and washers for rear flange i reused old gaskets they were fine

Why wont your Infiniti Q45 turn over?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Mine was the starter on 1996 I30. I downloaded the schematic diagrams for the electrical system. I took out fuse #17 (10 Amp) which basically shut down the anti-theft (start) and it still didn't start. After checking that fuse #33 (7.5 Amp) was good, I replaced the starter and it's working fine. The only other thing it could be is the inhibitor switch (Park or Neutral switch) so try both positions and if it doesn't start in either Park or Neutral, it's probably the starter unless you have a stick instead of an automatic. In stick shifts, there is another switch linked to the clutch...that can stop it from starting.

Why is my 2003 Dodge Diesel hard to start when it is cold outside?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

any diesel is hard to start when cold. your diesel should have a block heater somewhere. find the plug in and when vehicle is parked, plug the cord into a 110 outlet.that should solve your problem. this is all explained in your owners handbook. To add to this answer: Most diesel engines work off a set timer (they don't know the difference between -20 and plus 20 degrees) of around 15sec. A very popular solution used in Canada is to have the timer bypassed to a switch. The best type of switch to use is called a MOMENTARY, it only activates the plugs with your finger on the switch. Not touching the switch the plugs will work normally, but when you hold the switch on it will continue to run as long as you want (I know Toyota Landcrusiers glow plugs can run for a minute with no problems to the plugs. A shop that installs automatic car starters would be the best place to have the custom switch installed due to their common contact with the various vehicle wiring (not a dealership).

the glow plugs are located inside the the valve covers on the engine' the wire harness goes thru the cover gaskets.so this is a major job.if you break a gasket while removing, they cost about $70 , each to replace. you also need special tools to remove glow plugs. it is much easier and safer to take the truck to a reputable diesel mechanic.
