What is a 1950 georgivs sextvs rex south- Africa coin worth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It depends on the date and condition of the coin. Pennies with King George the Fifth were produced in South Africa between 1923 and 1936. Broadly, the most valuable are those produced from 1926 through 1928 - these can be worth up to US$100 in Uncirculated condition (although probably only about US$10 in nice circulated condition - what collectors call "Very Fine"). Later coins are probably worth more like US$20 to US$40 in Uncirculated condition and a dollar or two in Very Fine. Note that a handful of Proof pennies were produced from 1930 onwards(10 to 60) - these are worth US$300 to US$800 each (many more 1923 Proofs were produced, leaving them valued at about US$50 each).

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You are asking about a 3 Pence coin (KM#26) from South Africa dated 1942. The coin is 16.5mm in diameter, weighs 1.41 grams and is 80% silver, giving it an ASW (Actual Silver Weight) of 0.0363 troy ounces. The obverse (front) of the coin has an image of King George VI of Great Britain and the words "GEORGIVS VI REX IMPERATOR" (Latin for "George the Sixth, King and Emperor"). The reverse (back) of the coin has a protea flower in the center of three bars shaped as an inverted triangle, with the words "SOUTH AFRICA", the date, and "SUID-AFRIKA" (Afrikaans for "South Africa") above the flower and the denomination, "3D" ("D" being the abbreviation for pence) below it. 8,055,999 of these coins were produced in 1942.

With silver currently (as of April 6, 2010) at $18.10 per troy ounce, the "melt value" of this coin is about 66 US cents. Numismatically (according to the Standard Catalog of World Coins), an example is probably worth about US$1 in Very Fine condition, US$3 in Extremely Fine condition, and US$9 in Uncirculated condition.

The coin weighs 28.28 grams and is 50.0% silver, giving it an ASW (Actual Silver Weight) of 0.4546 troy ounces. With silver at US$30.00 per troy ounce (as of September 23, 2011), the "melt value" of this coin is about US$13.64.

The coin was produced in honor of the 300th Anniversary of the Founding of Capetown. The obverse of the coin has a portrait of King George the Sixth and the words "GEORGIVS SEXTUS REX" (Latin for "George the Sixth, King"). The reverse has an image of a a schooner ship under sail in a harbor), with the words "SUID-AFRIKA" (Afrikaans for "South Africa") to the left, the dates "1652-1952" above, "SOUTH AFRICA" to the right, and the denomination ("5s", an abbreviation for "5 Shillings") below.

1,698,000 of these coins were produced in 1952. According to the 2010 Standard Catalog of World Coins, an example is worth about US$9.00 in Extremely Fine condition and US$12.00 in Uncirculated condition. Given the current price of silver, however, the actual numismatic value of these coins is probably somewhat higher.

You are asking about a 1 Krugerrand coin from South Africa (KM#73). The coin weighs 33.9300 grams and is 91.70% gold, giving it an AGW (Actual Gold Weight) of 1 troy ounce (actually 1.0003 troy ounces). The obverse (front) has a portrait of Paul Kruger facing left with the words "SOUTH AFRICA" to the right and "SUID-AFRIKA" (Afrikaans for "South Africa") to the right. The reverse (back) has an image of a springbok (a South African antelope) with "KRUGERRAND" above, "19" to the left, "80" to the right, and "FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD" below. 3,004,945 such coins were produced in 1980, as well as another 6,600 in Proof (nicer surface, 220 serrations on the edge, as versus 180 serrations for regular krugerrands).

As of May 1, 2013, gold is valued at US$1,457.00 per troy ounce.

According to the Standard Catalog of World Coins, such a coin would be worth the gold value plus 5% in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, and gold value (plus, perhaps, a small premium) otherwise. In Proof condition, the premum over gold value would probably be 10-15%.

What is the value of a set of Rhodesian coins 1964?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Apparently in 1966 the "rebel" Rhodesian Government decided to issue a set of gold coins to commemorate the first anniversary of the UDI.

There were apparently 2000 of the sets issued. (which is not a lot really). The gold content is 1.529 ounces. So at current gold price the coins will be worth approximately $2905 / €2017. There will obviously be a bit of a premium to add to a collector. There is generally a 10% premium on coins so €2200 roughly at todays spot price of $1900. This will obviously rise and fall as the gold spot price does.

What is the value of a double dated coin?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It's not clear what you mean by "double dated"

If you have a quarter, half, or dollar with the double date 1776-1976 it is a Bicentennial celebration coin. These were minted in huge quantities so unless it is a proof coin it its original package, it's only worth face value.

If you have a "coin" with the same face on both sides and 2 different dates, it's a novelty item with no value to collectors.

If you have something other than these 2 possibilities, please post a new question with more details.
