ADHD often occurs with other mental disorders such as depression and anxiety disorders. Up to thirty percent of individuals with ADHD suffer from depression; in some cases, the depression is a result from the uncontrolled symptoms of ADHD.

Is ADHD rare?

ADHD is actually quite a common disorder. 3 to 5 out of a 100 born will develop the disorder, and most born with the disorder never grow out of it. This statistic is based from the United States, and the occurrence varies from country to country.

What percent of children in the US have ADHD?

The frequency of occurence of ADHD can vary from country to country. We may note that funnily, the instances of ADHD in developed countries is higher than in under-developed countries. This is majorly attributed to the lack of established mechanisms to diagnose and treat the condition in most developing countries. Or in other words, the frequency could be much more outside of the developed world, but the infrastructure needed for diagnosis and treatment or for the documentation and assimilation of pertinent information is more often than not absent. So there may not be one reliably accurate number that gives the frequency of ADHD in children and young adults. But there are studies that show that it could be as varied as 3.5% in some countries (most likely developed ones) to as low as 1 in 250, or, about 0.4% in other countries (most likely in under-developed countries). What also complicates the problem is, the definition of ADHD and minor hyperactivity is subject to debate. Some thought leaders also debate the validity of ADHD as a significant mental condition. Hope this helps. ADD/ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed disorder of childhood, estimated to affect 3 to 5 percent of school-age children, and occurring three times more often in boys than in girls. It is estimated that on average about one child in every classroom in the United States needs help for this disorder. No one knows for sure whether the number of people with ADD/ADHD has risen, but it is very clear that the number of children identified with the disorder who get treatment has risen over the past decade. This could be due to greater media interest, heightened consumer awareness, and the availability of effective treatments. Other countries are observing a similar pattern. Whether the frequency of the disorder itself has risen remains unknown, and needs more research.

What are the possible reasons why ADHD is identified so much more often in boys more than girls?

I don't know specifically but I feel the first answer was just completely off (so if someone knows for sure please correct me). I don't believe it has been proven why but its possible its an automsomnal recessive trait which means it is a genetic trait. If it is recessive (its been a while since I've taken biology but..) it can be more likely that a male gets the bad gene. Basically imagine this: there are 3 possibilities BB, Bb, and bb. Only bb will make the child have ADHD. If you use a punnett square you'll find that the only way a girl can get it is if the father is bb and the mother is at least Bb if not also bb. I imagine that ADHD is genetic but like I said it could be something I don't know about like .. mistakes in reproduction of DNA or something.

Is it possible to be misdiagnosed with depression and have ADHD?

No, the symptoms are too different. Depression can only cause cognative problems that might be confused with ADD in older people, but ADHD has hyperactivity as a symptom, whereas people with depression typically have the exact opposite.

It can be hard to separate them, because ADHD or ADD can cause depression but depression can also cause concentration problems. Is there a direct relationship between parents who suffer from conduct disorders and their children having ADHD?

Conduct disorders are not exactly the same as "emotional and behavioral disorders" which include ADHD and depression. Check out this site for info about conduct disorders: nmha.org With ADD or ADD and depression there is a definite relationship between one generation and the next. I have done research on my family and it's medical history and found evidence of depression - alcoholism and suicides - in every single part of my family tree. Of course, I'm not saying that all of my family members suffer from an emotional or behavioral disorder. It's just that there have turned out to be an alarming number who do or had throughout several generations. ADD/ADHD is a relatively 'new' disorder compared to depression. Yet I have been diagnosed with adult ADD and I acknowledge that I have had to deal with it all of my life. My grandmother has told me of some of my father's behavior when he was young that fit the profile. And now, unfortunately, I am afraid I am seeing it in my son AND my oldest niece. It is genetic. But fortunately, this doesn't mean your children /will/ suffer from it, only that there is a chance of it. And thankfully, there is now help for kids with ADD/ADHD. It truly is miserable for a bright, intelligent, creative child to have to suffer so. And there are new treatments being made available all of the time, thank God.
