Hamlet is essentially a very unmotivated person. He is apathetic, and prefers to think rather than to act. However, the thing that drives his resolve (to kill Claudius, which becomes his goal in the play) is i) the resentment that his mother got over his father so fast and married his uncle, and ii) that his father's ghost appeared to him. It's not exactly certain what relationship Hamlet had with his father, but Shakespeare makes it seem as though perhaps that was one relationship that Hamlet was actually committed. The appearance of his father's ghost was the thing that motivated Hamlet early on in 'Hamlet'.

The main scene which expresses Hamlet's initial concerns and motivations prior to seeing the Ghost is Act 1, Scene 2. In this scene we see the tension between Hamlet and his new step-father Claudius, even before his Father's Ghost tells him that he was murdered by Claudius. This tension (expressed more openly on Hamlet's side but felt by both) comes from Hamlet feeling that everything regarding Claudius has happened too fast. The marriage between his mother and Claudius was in his opinion too soon after his father's funeral and Hamlet is disgusted by the way Claudius is already calling him "my son" and the way he is trying to move on from Old Hamlet's death as quickly as possible while Hamlet himself still feels the need to mourn. The marriage would have also been seen as morally dubious because Claudius used to be his uncle, and his mother's brother in law. Hamlet therefore frequently sees the union as incestuous. In his expressive soliloquy in Act 1, Scene 2, Hamlet also shows a more general frustration with the futility of the world, the "frailty" of women (an opinion resulting from his mother's marriage), and his sense that he has no one to talk to or share his emotions with (perhaps an allusion to his relationship with Ophelia, which is only looked at later in the play). These are all concerns and motivations that are developed afterwards and in the light of the Ghost's revelations, yet Shakespeare cleverly introduces them beforehand.

Wouldn't you? If the ghost of your dead father wanted to talk to you, I'd think you'd say, "Absolutely! Bring it on!" There is so much he could tell you even if he wasn't murdered by your uncle.

Gee, that's like asking what someone did before they were born! Hamlet does nothing before the play begins or else the play would have started earlier. The backstory that is outlined during the play suggests that Hamlet has been a student at Wittemberg university and has returned to Denmark upon the death of his father to find that his uncle has been elected king. None of this really tells us how he behaves at any time before the play starts.

^ is this person serious? The person who asked the question meant "before the play" that the players perform for hamlet, horatio, gertrude, and claudius.

I don't know--possibly it might have been the horrible and ghastly ghost of his dead and much loved father saying in a booming otherworldly voice, "If ever thou didst thy dear father love, revenge his foul and most unnatural murder!"

Hamlet is motivated by the wish to avenge his father's murder. Revenge is what drives Hamlet throughout the play.

Hamlet, attempting to convince everyone that he is crazy, acts a little strange, as though he has a plan in mind.

He doubts some foul play - which in modern terms means that he thinks there WAS some foul play..
