Why is it that both men and women can be considered gay yet women are termed lesbians and men are just gay is there a term other than gay for men?

No, there is not. The term "gay" applies equally to both genders, and in fact, there is a small but growing movement to replace the word "lesbian" with the word "gay".
Furthermore, the word "gay" generally refers only to men if it is coupled with the word "lesbian."
