Alcohol is a diuretic meaning that it increases the amount of urine that the body produces. When a person drinks alcohol their kidneys produce more urine than normal in order to rid the body of the toxin. This is why a person who drinks a lot of alcohol will urinate frequently.

The more a person drinks the more urine their body will produce. This is because the kidneys work faster to get rid of the alcohol. Some signs that a person is drinking too much alcohol include:

  • Urinating more frequently
  • Drinking more than usual
  • Feeling thirsty after drinking
  • Feeling tired and weak

It is important to remember that drinking too much alcohol can have serious health consequences. If a person notices any of the signs listed above they should speak to a doctor or health care provider for advice.

A person who drinks a lot of alcohol must urinate frequently because the body is trying to rid itself of the excess liquid. Alcohol is a diuretic meaning it increases the amount of water excreted by the kidneys resulting in more frequent urination. Additionally alcohol can irritate the bladder leading to a frequent urge to void. In summary:

  • Alcohol is a diuretic causing the body to excrete more water through the kidneys
  • Alcohol can irritate the bladder leading to an increased urge to urinate

These two factors combine to cause a person who drinks heavily to need to urinate frequently.

Alcohol inhibits ADH secretion. ADH ( anti-diuretic hormone) causes kidneys to reabsorb water back into the bloodstream directly from the renal tubules. This concentrates the salts and waste products in the liquid which then becomes urine.

When ADH secretion becomes inhibited, water cannot be reabsorbed into the bloodstream by the renal tubules as efficiently, which then results in larger volumes of water being produced.

In other words alcohol is a diuretic which has the effect of increase urination which depletes your body of water causing you to become dehydrated
