I would use either a modified,or improved cylinder, choke for close in small bird hunting.
It's good for SMALL Game hunting. Like birds or squirrels.
Years ago there were shotguns known as "Punt guns". They were not fired from the shoulder, but strapped to small boats (punts) and used to kill flocks of ducks for sale. No longer legal for hunting, these were muzzleloaders, about 2 guage, and fired about a pound of shot. The largest shotgun that was shoulder fired was the 4 guage. In current US hunting regs, the 10 g is the largest legal shotgun for hunting.
It can be- for very small game animals- squirrel and rabbit sized. It is too small for deer, and rifles are not used for birds.
Small changes in length have little effect. Large changes have more effect. Longer barrels in hunting shotguns are used to control the swing of the gun while tracking birds rather than effective range considerations.

That will depend on what you are hunting, what gauge you are using and what load you are shooting. As a very general rule, modified and improved.
The only thing that can kill with a BB ball is a small squirrel and a chipmunk and small birds. But with the pellets you can kill small game and game birds(only if your BB gun is a shotgun can only use a shotgun to kill birds because it is against the law to kill birds with a bow and arrow, crossbow, hand gun and , rifle. OK now we move on to the pellets. If you buy the pellets you can kill anything ranging from chipmunk to coyote. BB guns can only hunt small game so when you buy a BB gun look at the packing and see if it can be used for small game hunting and remember BB shotgun only...if you want to hunt game birds. ENJOY HUNTING YOUR SMALL GAME!

as a hunting dog for birds and small vermin
The New Victor Crescent Firearms Co 12 gauge, single shot shotgun is well suited for hunting small game and birds. The breech loading design is reliable and allows for quick reloading.
410 or 20 gauge, the make of the gun depends on what you like

Squirrel Hunting is a very fun type of hunting. Commonly, you use a .22 rifle, Shotgun, or a High-Powered Pellet Rifle to hunt Squirrels. If you are new to hunting, I would recommend Squirrel hunting before big game. It will allow you to get used to small animals and small calibers before you move up to the big stuff. It is fun to go out with friends with small rifles and Squirrel hunt. To me, the most fun type of hunting is deer or duck hunting, where stealth is important. The two types of ways I hunt squirrel is walking around in the woods with a shotgun, or sitting by a tree with a .22 rifle or Pellet rifle. Try other types of hunting too, they are all different and fun in there own ways.
it depends on what you are hunting for but beagles, coon dogs, and golden retrievers are some of them. if you are hunting small animals like: birds, rabbits, mice, voles, etc. the westie is the best hunting dog for that but like the person above said, it depends on what your hunting
