The pass code is for the locking and unlocking of your iPhone. You will need to go in to settings, security then enable pass lock. You will be given the code or default number with your instructions, as it is best to change it to a number you will remember. It operates on the same basis as a pin for a bank card. Once you have set the pass code, you can then enable your phone through settings to lock your phone, at intervals when its in stand by or you switch it on from an off position.
The pass code therefore protects your iPhone so that only you can use it, with your code.
