It is not used regularly, but some people use it after they have been 'listing', as in this case, where I am listing fruits.
A letter comes before a colon. If you were organizing books, it would become: Apples, oranges, and pears Apple: Oranges and pears. However many people do not count colons as letters when alphabetizing.
