No, it does not harden! It is always playable, even if you forget it on your desktop. The only way to harden silly putty would be to expose it to extremely cold temperatures. For example, Silly Putty hardens when put into liquid Nitrogen. It will harden the putty, but it will regain its texture as soon as it warms up.

Scrape and scrape. What ever you do don't put it in the washer yet. It will stain whatever it is if you put it in the wash.
If you're looking for the original Silly Putty, I'd suggest you find some on eBay. Or, if you're looking for a cheaper alternative, you could always go to a dollar store because they are always selling little toys like Silly Putty.
