It gets rid of some of the "bite" (flattens out the carbonation), and changes the taste. I used to do it when I was younger and couldn't afford good beer because of this. Now, in good microbe's beer I will use it every so often if I'm just in a "mood".

In a Mexican beer like Corona I almost always add a lemon-lime, or lime-chili salt to it because it just brings out all of the flavors. If you aren't sure what I'm talking about, or don't think it's very common, just go to twang.com and you'll see what I mean.

It depends on which beer it is. Usually everything contains salt in it. The only thing is that its under a different name. When you look at the conteents on the back of the bottle or can it should say sodium content.
