Manufacturers used to say that once every week you have to drain the battery, this will extend the lifetime of the battery.
Nowadays, no matter what you'll do, after a year you'd be lucky if your battery lasts 30 minutes. My laptop is a year and a half old now and the battery lasts for literally 10 minutes. The point is it's not worth worrying about it.
This guy must have a bad battery. Don't listen to him.
Once your battery is charged to 100%, the laptop runs off the plugged in power so there is no worry. However, it's a good idea to run your battery to about 20%-40% every few weeks to sort of "exercise" it, as it's still a chemical device.
