As we all know by now, beer and wine have some medicinal and nutritional benefits. But we also all know it makes you fat. Here's a rundown on why. # It has calories, obviously. See the Related Link to the right for the calories in some common beers. # It often accompanies irresponsible eating. Drinking can mean partying, and partying can mean snacks, fried foods, etc. Moreover, as you become intoxicated you might care less about what you're eating. This isn't just anecdotal or introspective knowledge. Studies have shown that people eat more on average when they have beer or wine with their meal. # Drinking begets drinking. One beer may not have many more calories than a can of soda, but how often do you have one beer? If you have one, you have two or three. # Here's a lesser-known but very significant way in which drinking makes you fat. Alcohol slows down your metabolization of other fat. Most of the alcohol you drink is converted by your liver into something called acetate and this acetate is used as your body's primary source of fuel and energy. It replaces fat consumption. One study showed that fat metabolism dropped by 73% for several hours after two drinks. According to one source, a few drinks can mean your fat loss is stalled for a few hours. More than a few drinks could mean it's stalled for as long as four days. # More alcohol means less muscle. Less muscle means less fat burning. First, you need to be well-hydrated to build muscle. Alcohol dehydrates you. Even more significantly, drinking raises the levels of the muscle-wasting hormone cortisol and increases the breakdown of testosterone for up to 24 hours. This is even worse when you drink after exercising.

Yes, it might be in consumed in very large quantities. However, in general, alcohol is compatible with dieting. In fact, women who begin drinking tend to lose a small amount of weight. The reasons for this are unknown, although there are several hypotheses.

Research suggests that alcohol is one of the most fattening things you could consume. The problem is not only that alcohol is calorie-dense itself, second only to fat, but that it also tends to leave consumed protein, carbohydrate, and fat to be deposited to your fat stores as well.

The liver converts alcohol into components that cannot be stored by the body, and therefore must be metabolized immediately. When the body cycles into burning these components, it stops metabolizing and utilizing protein, carbohydrate, and fat. These nutrients are then processed and stored as fat wherever the person tends to carry it.

In summary, alcohol is highly fattening because it is high calorie and basically halts fat burning while activating fat production and storage in the body.

Why alcohol makes one fatty?

It's not the alcohol itself which makes a person "fatty", it's the fact that when you eat and then consume larger amounts of alcohol, your liver prioritizes to break that down the alcohol rather then the food you have just eaten seeing it as alcohol is toxic. Your body will then store the carbohydrates not broken down by the liver as fat.
