When muscles are required to lift or in any way work harder they are burning calories. Calories are the basic unit of "work" that can be measured. Gyms provide us with strength and endurance training equipment which are designed to increase the amount of "work" that the muscles perform.

In other words, when we work out at a gym we burn more calories (provided that you're actually doing something) If we burn more calories than we consume there is no other option than to loose weight.
