Place them in direct sunlight, in a window sill. They are delicate and can't take the direct light. They require being in a portion of a room that has no sun shining on it at all. (Indirect light)
The first thing you have to do is cut it all down - ALL OF IT. A patch of bamboo is one living organism. After you cut it down the rhizomes will start sending up thick shoots. These shoots grow amazingly fast and when they first come up they are very soft and tender. Walk the patch daily and kick these shoots over. They will pop off at the base. Soon the rhizomes will start sprouting low bushy clumps with a very dense concentration of leaves. Hit these with poison. Purchase a good sprayer (I used a 5 gallon backpack sprayer) and buy the concentrated Wal-Mart Weed and Grass Killer. It's about 8 dollars for one of the small containers and will make about 10 gallons of poison when mixed with water. I've tried every kind of poison imaginable and this is the only one that actually kills bamboo. It has the same ingredient (glycophosphate) as RoundUp but its in a higher concentration and MUCH cheaper. During warm weather walk the area where you cut the bamboo down at least once a week and spray any sprouts you see. It might take you 2 or 3 seasons to be certain you have killed it all but be persistent and do not give this plant any leeway or it will take over with a vengeance (there's a reason this plant is called the Godzilla plant).
