To rehabilitate an alcoholic, it's important to seek professional help from a counselor, therapist, or support group like Alcoholics Anonymous. Treatment may involve detoxification, counseling, therapy, and support to address physical, mental, and emotional aspects of alcohol addiction. Developing a strong support system and making lifestyle changes can also aid in recovery.

You cannot rehabilitate an alcoholic until he or she wants to be rehabilitated. Once that person is ready to stop drinking there are several ways that they can be treated for their alcoholism. Rehab and AA have been shown to work quite well.

You might begin with a program such as Moderation Management. If that doesn't work, you might try a program with a proven record of long-term success, the best example being Stanton Peele's Lifestyle Program.

Whatever you try, don't give up.

Key steps taken at an alcohol rehabilitation center could include use of the 12 step program, support systems and groups, and inpatient and outpatient treatment. Also, one would imagine other key steps are making sure the person seeking treatment is not put into a situation where there would be alcohol to tempt them before they are ready to move forward past treatment.

Depending on several factors you may not have to go through an official detox but just stop using alcohol. These factors include age, medical status and drug history. If a detox is needed it would be recommended to consult a professional.

Generally, you can't. People have to make their own choices. But if someone is ready to admit that their drinking is a problem, then they're making the biggest step toward change, which is really the first. The good news is, it's all downhill from there.

So once you get them to admit that there's even a problem, the rest falls into place. Get them involved with AA (Alcoholics Anonymous). There's at least one chapter in virtually every city of more than 20,000 population in North America, and in almost every large city of Europe and Australia, as well as in Mexico City. All you have to do is look around.

You can't force people to listen; all you can do is open the way for them to do it themselves. Once they can see it for themselves, they tend to get very motivated to finish.
